Consett & District Heritage Initiative are a voluntary organisation. The group was founded in May 2010 with the goal to make the history of our area accessible to all. We believe strongly in education and sharing. As a group we have had the great pleasure of attending many of the local schools to provide numerous displays and talks. Since our inception, the CDHI have held 2-3 exhibition’s a year as well as numerous displays that have been seen by 1000’s. We hope this has been a great learning experience as well as giving people the chance to reminisce and enjoy our fantastic local heritage.
As an Archive we are growing at a steady rate with donation’s of photo’s, postcards, books and artefacts which we hope will continue. Through archiving and sharing of information we hope to save our heritage for the future generations.
We are based in The Lodge, Blackhill & Consett Park where we have our office on the first floor. The Lodge is located just up from the bottom gates of the park, located on Laburnum Avenue, Blackhill. Our office is open most Wednesdays from 10am -4pm for anyone interested in finding out more about our local history, and sometimes on a Tuesday morning 10am-12pm. There is also a heritage display of old photos and memorabilia in the entrance foyer.
With this website we hope to extend the ability of the archive to reach more people than ever before, making it truly an archive for all. The CDHI are merely the custodians of our heritage making sure it is saved for future generation’s as well as enabling the availability and access to those who wish to learn more about the area and its history.
The CDHI have also had an online presence via it’s Facebook group since May 2011, attracting over fifteen thousand members and growing, as well as ten’s of thousands more regular views from non members.
